Project Management

We do not offer a project management service on major projects. This is specialised work where the project manager's role is very distinct from the architect's lead consultant role. We work regularly with a wide range of project managers and welcome their involvement in making the architect's role simpler and more focused.

Much of our work on historic buildings is on a modest financial scale - not large enough to warrant a separate project manager. However, despite its relatively low financial value, this work can be extremely complicated and requires the co-ordinated input of a series of specialist conservators. Often the work does not lend itself to conventional contracting methods and there is no lead contractor to take on the co-ordination of a series of specialist sub-contractors. Under these circumstances our project management skills are an essential ingredient in ensuring the successful delivery of the work.

A good example of this was the re-erection of the Hereford Screen for the Victoria & Albert Museum. The screen was a massive three dimensional jigsaw of iron components ranging from massive elements that needed heaving lifting gear to the most fragile pieces of wrought iron decoration. A wide range of specialist conservation skills was required as well as input from the Museum staff. The whole project was managed by one of PMT's partners, Jamie Coath. This type of specialised project management has been widely applied to projects for the National Trust and for the Deans & Chapters of the Cathedrals.
