Conservation Plans

In addition to being a leading Architectural practice active in the repair and renovation of historic buildings, Purcell Miller Tritton is also involved in various services relating to historic research, assessment and analysis. The practice currently offers a wide range of services, including Conservation Management Plans, Archaeological Desk-Based Assessments, Heritage Impact Assessments, and Conservation Area Appraisals, as well as providing consultancy for larger projects such as Environmental Impact Assessments and Management Plans.

The practice has prepared a number of Conservation Plans and Statements for a wide range of projects, including in-depth analysis at major Grade I listed buildings like the British Museum as well as more brief and concise reports for other more modest structures.

We firmly believe that a good Conservation Plan is an excellent tool for understanding a building or site, assessing its value, and providing a basic framework for the future use and care of a building. We have, however, come to believe that an over-complicated or over-prescriptive plan can be more of a hindrance than a help.

The production of Conservation Management Plans and other reports is done completely in-house using the expertise of a senior and experienced conservation architect in conjunction with a team of architectural historians. This team of highly skilled professionals combines backgrounds in architecture, archaeology and conservation. The collective knowledge of the team contributes to the production of comprehensive documents intended to help understand the history and significance of historic sites and buildings, as well as manage future change and assess potential future development.

The practice has recently prepared the following Conservation Management Plans, many with grant aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund: The British Museum; St George's Hall, Liverpool; The London Zoo; The New Bodleian Library at Oxford University; Clare College at Cambridge University, Leighton House Museum in London, and many more.
