A Conservation Plan was prepared for Liverpool's finest civic building, and arguably the finest neo-classical building in Europe. The plan defines the cultural significance of the building and its contents and was used to set out the policies that would be appropriate to enable that significance to be retained, or recovered, in its future use and development.
Following the completion of the Conservation Plan the practice alongside business consultants produced a Development Plan for the first phase of proposals to the Hall. The identified purpose of the proposals was to restore St George's Hall as an active multi-functional venue that reflects its importance as part of Liverpool's heritage and allows the building to play a full part in the life of the city. Underpinning this aim were four principal objectives: to restore the fabric of St George's Hall and secure its survival for future generations; to develop a programme for St George's Hall which ensures its future through increased usage and income generation; to increase accessibility to St George's Hall by reducing physical and organisation barriers to enjoyment; and to ensure that the building is fully integrated into the surrounding cultural quarter.
The practice has subsequently been appointed as Architects and Design Team leaders to continue their involvement with the implementation of phase 2 of proposals, which also has included the completion of the floodlighting to the exterior of the building.
