Project The Representation of Kew Palace
An intensive two year restoration project at Kew Palace in South West London has been completed on time for the re-opening of the Grade I Listed Scheduled Monument in 2006. The building, managed and maintained by Historic Royal Palaces, has been closed to the public for over 10 years.
The project focused on a new presentation of the historic interiors to celebrate the role of Kew Palace in the life of George III, while addressing the need for greater access for all visitors to an historic building.
The scope of works included the design of an external, timber-clad lift on the west side of the Palace, a discreet brick and stone access ramp at the main entrance to the building and the creation of a new single storey welcome facility for ticketing and an interpretation exhibition adjacent to the palace. The restoration of the interior involved the re-instatement of the original interior decoration and furnishing, developed through meticulous research and analysis of the building and the sensitive installation of services to enable the use of audio visual equipment as part of a new interpretation scheme.
