Location Deal, Kent
Services Full Architectural Services

Northbourne Park School is an independent day and boarding school for children aged 3 - 13 years. It is accommodated within the historic house and grounds of Betteshanger House near Deal, Kent. The Listed Mansion House was substantially re-modelled by George Devey in 1856.

Purcell Miller Tritton was commissioned by the School to develop proposals for new three new Dormitory Houses, Changing Rooms, Stage facilities and a new pre-Preparatory School.

Following careful negotiations with the Local Authority and English Heritage Planning Permission was obtained for a development with a total value of approximately £5m.

The first phase of building work began in late 2003 and consisted of a new Changing Room extension to the existing Sports Hall and single freestanding Dormitory House to accommodate 25 children and support staff. The total value of this phase of the development was £535,000.

The new buildings have a clean, contemporary appearance and make use of profiled metal roofing and cedar cladding while remaining sensitive to the historic setting and the local Kentish vernacular. Budgetary constraints were very tight and the buildings, now complete, have been successfully designed and executed to achieve maximum value for money for the client.
