Purcell Miller Tritton has been working at St John's Church, Stratford to provide a new extension and facilities to the existing ecclesiastical building which is a central element of an extensive regenration programme for the inner city. This impressive church is now a community building as well as an active place of worship. The church was aiming to encourage further use by local people and as a next step to do this wanted to provide a new multi-purpose hall, creche facilities, counselling rooms, WCs and a coffee bar.
To ensure that the new extension was fitting and complemented the original Blore building, secondhand gault bricks were used for the external walls and bathstome for the door and window surrounds. Natural welsh slate was also used on the new hall and entrance porch. The interior has light painted and natural wood finishes. A further concern was the previous lack of wheelchair access. A new access ramp was deigned to serve both the church and new extension. An internal platform lift also provides access between the two levels of the building.
