Thursday, 14th February 2008

John Burton, Senior Partner at leading architect and historic building consultants, Purcell Miller Tritton, has given the two yearly presentation of The Bridge Lecture Series for The Worshipful Company of Engineers and City University London.

Drawing on his experience as surveyor to the fabric of Westminster Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral, John gave an insightful talk on The Engineering Challenge of the Gothic Cathedrals, recently held at the Oliver Thompson Lecture Theatre at City University London. From both a theological and structural perspective, John discussed the engineering challenges of the gothic cathedrals from the developments and function of the simple Romanesque vault through to the Gothic period of architecture. The audience comprised senior City Liverymen from the built environment, members of City University and students. His contribution to the evening gave those present in the full auditorium, a glimpse into the craft and knowledge required to build such magnificent Cathedral structures through the centuries.

Commenting on the lecture John said, “I am extremely honoured and delighted to have been chosen to give such a highly prestigious lecture where I could draw on my knowledge and expertise from my role at Westminster Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral to deliver an educational and worthwhile presentation. “

John Burton, in his role as Surveyor to the Fabric, has advised the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury on the care of Canterbury Cathedral since 1990. John has since added to his responsibility, the role of Surveyor to the Fabric of Westminster Abbey, advising the Dean and Chapter of the Royal Peculiar on the care of their collegiate church, where eminent predecessors in that role include Sir Christopher Wren and Sir Robert Hooke.
