St George’s Hall in Liverpool and Wentworth Castle in Barnsley have won Special Awards at this year’s prestigious Civic Trust Awards in Newcastle, following £38 million restorations by leading architect and historic building consultant, Purcell Miller Tritton.
Acting as Lead Architect on both projects, Purcell Miller Tritton received the City of Culture Award, sponsored by the Civic Trust, for the £23 million restoration of the Grade I listed St George’s Hall, as well as the Partnership Award, sponsored by English Partnerships, for the £15million regeneration and restoration of Wentworth Castle and its estate. The Grade II listed Weston Park Museum in Sheffield was awarded a Commendation.
Purcell Miller Tritton worked with contractor Linford Group to carry out extensive repairs in the restoration of St George’s Hall. After 23 years of closure, the building now has a high level of flexibility which allows the halls to be used as concert and exhibition centres. As a result, the building has become a symbol of civic pride playing host to a number of functions and celebrations for Liverpool’s year as Capital of Culture.
The heritage-led regeneration project at Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park successfully resulted in the restoration of the Grade I listed building and its surrounding 600 acre estate, containing 26 listed estate buildings, monuments and follies.
Mark Goldspink, Chief Executive Officer of Purcell Miller Tritton, commenting on the success said, “We are delighted to have Purcell Miller Tritton’s work recognised in this manner by the Civic Trust which helps to reinforce our strength in Yorkshire and Merseyside. The awards are testament to superb teamwork established with both our client and contractor partners.”
The Civic Awards recognise outstanding projects that highlight the importance of design in the creation of places with a sense of identity and civic pride. Attended by over 450 guests, the Gala Dinner and Ceremony announced 100 Civic Trust Awards, Commendations and Mentions and included a keynote speech from Chris Wilkinson, Principal and founder of leading architects practice Wilkinson Eyre.
